    Đức Giáo Hoàng là một công dân Vatican ngay chính tại thời điểm được bầu làm Giáo Hoàng. Tuy nhiên, Đức Thánh Cha Phanxicô muốn giữ lại quốc tịch Á Căn Đình. Do đó, ngài vừa gia hạn căn cước và hộ chiếu Á Căn Đình của ngài.

    Cũng như bất kỳ người Á Căn Đình nào khác đang sống ở nước ngoài, Đức Giáo Hoàng sẽ phải đợi cho đến khi những văn bản mới được đưa đến, trong trường hợp của ngài, là tại nhà trọ Santa Marta của Vatican. Ngài yêu cầu không nên có bất kỳ đặc quyền nào để làm cho tiến trình gia hạn này nhanh hơn hoặc dễ dàng hơn.

    Khi Đức Giáo Hoàng Phanxicô chuẩn bị sẵn sàng để tông du các nước trong chiếc cặp của ngài thường có một cuốn sách cầu nguyện, một cuốn sách của Thánh Têrêsa thành Lisieux, một cuốn nhật ký và một dao cạo râu. Giờ đây, ngài sẽ sớm có thêm căn cước và hộ chiếu Á Căn Đình mới.
