Năm nay cũng là giỗ 90 năm của linh mục Gafignol (1917 - 2007), người có công lớn trong việc xây dựng ngôi nhà thờ Cù lao Giêng, mà hiện mộ phần của linh mục vẫn còn trong khuôn viên nhà thờ.
Nhà thờ Cù lao Giêng ở xã Tấn Mỹ, huyện Chợ Mới, tỉnh An Giang, là một công trình kiến trúc thờ cổ, được linh mục Gafignol (thường gọi là cha Nho) cho khởi công xây dựng từ năm Ất Hợi 1875, đời Tự Đức nhị thập bát niên. Việc xây dựng nhà thờ ở một vùng sông nước cù lao lúc bấy giờ vô cùng khó khăn gian khổ, ròng rã 12 năm, đến năm Đinh Hợi 1887 đời Đồng Khánh tam niên, mới hoàn thành ngôi nhà thờ khang trang như ta thấy ngày nay.
Nhà thờ được thiết kế theo mô típ Romane, một ngôi thánh đường theo kiểu Tây phương xuất hiện ở một vùng sông nước khuất nẻo như thế này làm cho người ta không khỏi ngạc nhiên và thích thú.
120 năm, trải qua bao biến cố thăng trầm của lịch sử, nhà thờ Cù lao Giêng vẫn tồn tại gần như nguyên vẹn, có thể nói đây cũng là một di tích cổ xưa của lịch sử Giáo hội Thiên Chúa giáo Việt Nam, và là niềm tự hào của kiến trúc tôn giáo trên đất Cù lao Giêng.
Mong sao, các linh mục kế nhiệm và bà con giáo dân tiếp tục bảo tồn di tích mà các vị tiền nhân đã cố công gầy dựng, để cho thế hệ mai sau còn được trông thấy một dấu chỉ của đức tin trong quá khứ.
