Thánh Fabianô là Giáo hoàng tử đạo năm 250. Đó là thời kỳ bắt đạo của vua Đêsiô. Các văn gia tiên khởi đã viết rằng Fabianô là một người vĩ đại lạ thường và nổi tiếng thánh thiện. Trong một lá thư ngắn được viết sau cái chết của đức Fabianô, thánh Cyprianô đã giải thích cách thức đức Fabianô được chọn làm Giáo hoàng như sau : Nhóm người họp lại chọn vị Giáo hoàng kế tiếp đã nhận được một dấu lạ là phải chọn Fabianô làm Giáo hoàng. Fabianô là người giáo dân đầu tiên được làm Giám mục, Giáo hoàng và được phúc tử vì đạo. Những di tích của đức Fabianô hiện đang được lưu giữ trong Vương cung Thánh đường thánh Sêbastianô. Hai vị tử đạo này cùng được mừng chung một ngày lễ.
Thánh Sêbastianô trở nên rất nổi danh vào những thế kỷ đầu của Giáo hội sơ khai. Là sĩ quan Roma, ngài được mọi người biết đến vì tấm lòng dũng cảm và tư cách tốt lành. Suốt thời ký bách hại của Điôclêsiô, Sêbastianô đã không chối bỏ đạo Công giáo. Những người bắn cung đã bắn các mũi tên vào thân xác Sêbastianô và bỏ ngài chết ở đó. Khi một bà góa thánh thiện đến táng xác Sêbastianô, bà rất kinh hoàng vì thấy ngài vẫn còn sống. Bà liền đưa Sêbastianô về nhà và băng bó các vết thương cho ngài. Rồi khi Sêbastianô bình phục, bà đã thuyết phục ngài trốn thoát cho khỏi những nguy hiểm của Roma. Nhưng Sêbastianô là một sĩ quan gan dạ. Ngài không đào tẩu. Thậm chí ngài đã tiến lại gần Điôclêsiô và can đảm thuyết phục vua phải ngưng ngay việc bách hại những tín hữu Công giáo. Nhà vua hoảng hồn khi nhìn thấy Sêbastianô vẫn còn sống. Ông không nghe những điều người sĩ quan nói và đã ra lệnh đánh đòn cho đến khi Sêbastianô tắt thở. Thánh nhân qua đời năm 228.
Thánh Fabianô là Giáo hoàng và thánh Sêbastianô là binh sĩ. Các ngài dạy chúng ta rằng Chúa Giêsu yêu thương từng người chúng ta vừa khi chúng ta có mặt trên thế gian này. Như hai thánh Fabianô và Sêbastianô, mỗi người chúng ta cũng có một món quà để trao ban. Món quà ấy là thực hiện vai trò trách nhiệm lớn lao như Fabianô hoặc là một sĩ quan dâng hiến như Sêbastianô. Nhưng điều quan trọng là phải trao ban hoàn toàn như gương sống của các ngài.
