    Theo truyền thuyết, Roma được lập thành vào năm 753 trước Công nguyên bởi hai anh em Remus và Romulus. Từ chữ Romulus đến Romanus, đến thành phố Roma.
    Thời Chúa Giêsu giảng đạo, đế quốc Roma đang phát triển cực thịnh, mở rộng khắp các vùng quanh Địa Trung Hải, với thành phố Roma là thủ đô.


    Việc thánh Phêrô rao giảng và tử đạo tại Roma là lý do Giáo hội chọn Roma là đế đô. Vì thế thành ngữ “mọi con đường đều dẫn về Roma” mang hai nghĩa. Nghĩa chính trị dưới thời đế quốc Roma, khi các địa phương đều tùng phục và nộp thuế. Nghĩa tinh thần trong Giáo hội, nói đến quyền quyết định tối hậu thuộc về các Đức thánh cha.
    Cuối thế kỷ XVI, các nghệ nhân thời Phục hưng đã góp phần rất lớn trong nhiều công trình kiến trúc và nghệ thuật tại thành phố này. Tham quan Roma, du khách sẽ có cảm giác như đứng trong một viện bảo tàng khổng lồ, nên Roma còn được du khách gọi là "thành phố bảo tàng".
    Từ 1870 Roma trở thành thủ đô nước cộng hòa Ý, Giáo hội chỉ sở hữu ngọn đồi Vatican ở kế cận Roma, sau trở thành một quốc gia độc lập với 44 mẫu tây và dưới một ngàn công dân, trong đó đa số là giáo sĩ và nhân viên tòa thánh.
    Đến Roma, chúng ta được được đi thăm nhiều công trình kiến trúc nổi tiếng gồm quảng trường, hý trường, cổ thành, nhà thờ, tu viện, hoàng cung, miếu thần, pháo đài, các tượng ảnh, các vòi phun nước...
    Sẽ rất tuyệt vời nếu đến Roma, "thành phố vĩnh hằng" vào mùa thu. Dưới ánh nắng vàng, dạo bước trên đường phố cổ, nhìn ngắm các công trình nghệ thuật, những đàn bồ câu bay lượn và những cư dân Italia khỏe khoắn, xinh đẹp và lãng mạn.
