Hôm qua, ngày 19 tháng 6 năm 2009, vào lúc 07 giờ sáng, Cha Phaolô Nguyễn Văn Hiển đã trải qua một ca phẫu thuật tim tại Bệnh Viện Trung Ương Huế. Sáng nay, ngày 20 tháng 6 năm 2009, ông Phaolô Trương Hát, Chủ tịch Hội Đồng Giáo xứ Tây Linh, rất bận rộn ở Khoa Huyết Học để xin máu chuyền cho Cha Phaolô đang rất cần nhiều máu loại O. Ông cho biết đã có 5 người đến cho máu mà vẫn chưa đủ. Trong những người tặng máu, có những người lương dân rất tốt. Theo Bác Sĩ nói, thường thì một ca phẫu thuật, sau khoảng 19 giờ, thì tỉnh lại. Trường hợp của Cha Phaolô thì vẫn bất tĩnh kể từ 7giờ 30 ngày 19 tháng 06 hôm qua, đến hôm nay, ngày 20 tháng 6 năm 2009 lúc 08 giờ 25, mà vẫn chưa tỉnh lại (tức là đã 25 giờ rồi). Sức khỏe của Ngài còn rất yếu sau ca phẫu thuật hôm qua. Bệnh tình của Cha Phaolô dẫn đến việc phẫu thuật là do có ba mạch máu đến tim bị hẹp và bị vôi hóa. Đặt Sten không được, nên phải mỗ. Cha Phaolô mắc bệnh này cách đây ba năm (tháng 2 năm 2006). Khi đó, chỉ bị hẹp một mạch vành và đặt sten được. Bây giờ thì sten đó vẫn tốt, nhưng lại bị hẹp ở hai mạch vành khác và còn bị vôi hóa nữa. Hiện Cha Phaolô đang nằm tầng năm, tại phòng Hồi Sức Khoa Tim Mạch Huế (hay còn gọi là Khu Sáu Tầng).
