Thuở xưa, có anh chàng nghe giảng về Phật, thích lắm, quyết chí đi tìm Ngài. Anh băng qua không biết cơ man nào là núi sông, rừng già, hang hố đầy gian nguy hiểm trở... vẫn không gặp được Phật giống như hình dạng trong Kinh.
Một hôm tại một sườn núi, chàng tình cờ gặp một cụ già râu tóc bạc phơ, cốt cách siêu phàm, bèn cung kính hỏi:
- Thưa cụ, cụ có biết Phật đang ngụ ở đâu không?
- Ồ! Chỗ nào mà không có Phật... Trên quãng đường vừa qua, chả lẽ cậu không gặp được ư?
- Con đã gặp vô số người, nhưng đều là hạng phàm phu tục tử cả. Con chưa thấy người như trong kinh mô tả.
- Người trong tranh đó đã được người Ấn Độ đốt thành tro và chia nhau xây tháp thờ cúng rồi.
- Thế Phật chết rồi sao?
- Ngài phân thân ở khắp mọi nơi. Cậu có còn muốn gặp Ngài nữa không?
- Thưa, dù bất cứ với hình dáng nào, nếu đích thật là Ngài thì con vẫn vô cùng muốn được một lần diện kiến.
- Vậy thì, cậu hãy quay về, trên đường về nếu con gặp người nào mang guốc trái ở chân phải, guốc phải ở chân trái thì người đó chính là một hóa thân của Phật.
Chàng trai hối hả quay về. Chàng vẫn không gặp người nào như cụ già diễn tả. Trời đã khuya, mệt lả người, bụng đói cồn cào, cậu gõ cửa. Bà mẹ nghe tiếng con, chống gậy cuống quýt đốt đèn, mở cửa. Trên đôi chân bà, chiếc guốc trái qua chân phải, guốc phải sang chân trái!
